DFP FIELD TRIP is an in-person creative retreat built around making work, trying new things, getting feedback, spending time with other photographers and learning from each other

We’ll live together in a private villa, share breakfast, head out into Prague with assignments, make work individually and together, write, critique, explore, and come back together each evening.


What FIELD TRIP Makes Room For:

Field Trip makes room for our photography and creativity to feel alive again. We’re going to (re)ignite the spark and creative connection you’ve been missing.

We don't get uninterrupted time to actually make work. We don’t get the focused time to make just for the sake of making… not for a client, not because we need something to post on socials, and not because the photographs have to become anything in particular, but rather just for the thrill of it and to fucking feel something.

We need just enough time to follow an idea because we're curious about it, make some questionable decisions, change our minds, talk about what we're making, and go back out and try again. And while we are at it, we get to explore an amazing city, spend time with new and old friends, eat, talk, and laugh until our stomach hurts.

That's what FIELD TRIP makes room for. Over five days and six nights in Prague, you’ll create, connect, and learn ways to reignite your love for making work just for the sake of making work.

It’s a creative revival for your photography, your mind, and your soul. (Can we get an Amen, hallelujah, fuck yes?!)

FIVE DAYS OF MAKING

Over five days, we'll give you a mix of assignments, creative exercises, constraints and longer-form work designed to get you out of your usual photographic habits.

It’s a time to experiment and explore what things move us, what things work and what things don’t.

You'll work independently and alongside other photographers, spend plenty of time out in Prague making photographs, come back together to look at what you've made, and have opportunities to respond to feedback and go out again.

There will be writing, critique, editing and conversation alongside the photography, because we want to spend some time thinking about why we make certain photographs, not only whether they're any good.

We're intentionally not giving you the entire programme beforehand. Part of FIELD TRIP is responding to an assignment without having six months to plan what you're going to do with it.

You just need to bring your camera, a way to cull and edit, and be willing to accept the invitation to play.

If you really want an overview of some of the things we will work on (we get it, the unknown can feel scary), here is a very zoomed out look at what we are planning: We'll work with documentary and observational photography, street photography, environmental portraiture, conceptual exercises, writing, editing and sequencing. There will be assignments and constraints, group conversations and critiques, and plenty of time to wander around Prague with your camera figuring out what the hell you're interested in (with guidance and support, of course).

why prague?

A few reasons. Back in 2017, we hosted our very first DFP Retreat in Prague. It was one of those experiences that helped kick this whole thing into high gear: making photographs together, exploring a city none of us knew particularly well, sharing meals, talking about the work and getting to know each other beyond a screen.

So, ten years later, as we celebrate 10 years of DFP, it feels pretty fucking perfect to go back to where it all began.

But also... we're not going to Prague to collect pretty pictures of Prague. We're going because it's an incredible place to look.

It's full of collisions: old and new, beautiful and ugly, residents and tourists, bachelor parties spilling into the streets and worshippers sitting quietly in churches, grandeur and ordinary life. There are trams, markets, pubs, apartment blocks, ornate façades, fluorescent supermarkets, parks, commuters, dogs, questionable souvenirs and entire neighborhoods where the postcard version of Prague disappears.

We'll spend plenty of time out in the city, but we'll also step away from our own photography for a shared cultural experience. We'll go look at photography, contemporary art or something wonderfully strange together, because sometimes the best thing you can do for your photography is stop looking at photography that looks like yours.

Oh, and the food is really fucking good.

An overview of the week

A general overview of how our days will go.

Times and details may shift slightly depending on the wants and needs of the group and the creative energy.

(DFP Retreats are a collaborative experience, and as we get closer to the dates, we will be sending out a form so you can suggest any topics or hours you would like us to schedule in and we will try our best to be sure touch on those during our time together).

Arrive in Prague, settle into the house and meet everyone. We'll have pizza for dinner (and wine if that’s your thing) and we’ll keep the evening easy and fun.

WEDNESDAY-
Arrivals & Welcome

We will start each morning with breakfast (included) followed by a workshop session, where you will then be sent to work on that day’s project/assignment/exercise.

These are our full working days. Expect a mixture of education, assignments, independent and collaborative work, time in Prague, critique, conversation, writing and plenty of space to actually make photographs.

The rhythm will change from day to day. Sometimes we'll send you out with something specific to work on. Sometimes you'll have a longer stretch to follow something that's developing. We'll keep coming back together throughout the week to look at work and talk about where it's going.

Ukrainian photographer Tania Ruda will also join us to share her work and process and give the group an assignment of her own.

Lunch and Dinner will be on your own (although we might coordinate to go out or order in together. There is a stocked kitchen which will have staple items, snacks, drinks, etc. and you can feel free to purchase groceries for yourself to put in the fridge as well).

Create / Workshop Days

We'll spend part of our final full day experiencing Prague together, then return to the house to edit, reflect and bring the week's work together.

That evening we'll share what we've made, followed by a Farewell Evening, a long table, good food, wine and a themed celebration.

      The only thing not included is your accommodation.

    • Off-site participation is available for a small number of attendees.

  • A villa in Prague with easy access to the entire city via walking, bus, Uber, subway, and tram

  • The layout of the villa is such that most participants will have to share rooms. The property includes:

    • Double-bed rooms with one double bed. These can be shared by two participants who are comfortable sharing a bed, or booked for single occupancy for an additional €499

    • Twin Rooms with two Single Beds

    • Triple Rooms with three Single Beds

    • Quadruple Rooms with four Single Beds

  • Participants are welcome to request to room with friends, or we can pair you with other participants. Room preferences will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis wherever possible.

    There are only two rooms available for single occupancy (for the additional €499 single occupancy room fee), so these will be offered in the order they are booked.

What’s NOT Included

FAQs

  • FIELD TRIP: Prague is for people who make photographs. You don’t need to fit a certain style, work in a particular genre or be at a certain point in your career. What matters most is that you’re curious, open to experimenting and excited to make work alongside other people who are equally invested in their creative practice.

    Spaces are intentionally limited to 16 participants, so there’s time for proper conversations, thoughtful feedback, questions, collaboration and actually getting to know the people you’re spending the week with.

  • Yes. FIELD TRIP is open to photographers of all levels, as long as you’re comfortable using your own camera and equipment.

    We won’t be teaching technical fundamentals like exposure, camera settings or how to use your gear, although we will absolutely talk about creative shooting techniques and the choices we make while photographing.

    The assignments, discussions and critiques are designed to meet you wherever you are in your practice. You don’t need years of experience or a polished portfolio. You just need to know your way around your camera, be curious, and be willing to make photographs, experiment and talk about the work.

  • Yes!

    There will be education, discussions, critique, writing and other things happening throughout the week, but we're deliberately building the schedule around making work, rather than filling every hour with teaching.

    Across the five full workshop days, you'll have plenty of time to be out in Prague with your camera, work on assignments and follow whatever starts to interest you. Some of that time will be structured and some will be yours to decide how to use.

  • Yes. There’s a lot happening over the five workshop days, but we deliberately don’t want FIELD TRIP to feel like a race from one activity to the next.

    There will be time to eat together, talk, go through what you’ve created, have a drink, disappear for a bit if you need to, wander around Prague or keep the conversation going long after dinner.

    We're leaving space in the schedule on purpose.

  • Absolutely. This isn't a conference where someone teaches for an hour and then disappears.

    We'll be living, photographing, eating and working alongside you throughout the week. There will be structured education and critique, but you'll also have plenty of opportunities to ask questions, show us what you're working on, talk through an idea or pull one of us aside for a conversation.

    Keeping FIELD TRIP to just 16 participants is a big part of making that possible.

  • Rooms are allocated thoughtfully based on the information you share in your pre-FIELD TRIP questionnaire. Most participants will share a room with other attendees unless they have booked one of the limited private-room upgrades.

    If you're booking with a friend, you can request to room together and we'll do our best to make that happen. If you're both happy sharing one of the double-bed rooms, you can let us know that too.

    Room preferences will be accommodated wherever possible, but specific room types cannot be guaranteed.

  • Yes. We have a small number of FIELD TRIP + Stay Elsewhere places for participants who would prefer to arrange their own accommodation in Prague.

    You'll still take part in the full FIELD TRIP experience and join us at the villa each day starting with breakfast. The only thing not included is your accommodation.

  • Prague is generally considered a safe destination for international travellers, but as with any major city, normal precautions apply, particularly around personal belongings in busy tourist areas and on public transport.

    We also don't expect anyone to navigate the week completely on their own. We'll have a group chat before and throughout FIELD TRIP, and much of our time out photographing will be spent alongside other participants.

    We'll include practical safety information, local transport advice and emergency details in the travel guide we send before the trip.

  • Your camera equipment, whatever you normally use to make photographs, comfortable shoes and clothes you're happy spending a lot of time walking around Prague in.

    We'll send you a proper packing list and travel guide before FIELD TRIP. You do not need to buy special photography equipment for the retreat.

  • We'll send you a detailed FIELD TRIP travel guide before the retreat with the villa address, arrival information, transport options, our personal mobile numbers and everything else you'll need to find us.

    From Prague Airport or the main train station, you'll be able to reach the villa by taxi, Uber or other local transport options.

    We'll also set up a group chat before FIELD TRIP so everyone can compare arrival times. If several of you are arriving around the same time, you can coordinate and travel to the villa together.

  • Arrival at the villa: April 21, 2027 anytime from 5:00pm

    Departure from the villa: April 27, 2027 by 10:30am

    Wednesday, April 21 is our arrival day, so there is no workshop programming that day. You'll have time to arrive, settle into the villa and meet everyone before we have pizza and wine together that evening.

    Our five full FIELD TRIP days run from Thursday through Monday. Tuesday, April 27 is departure day.

  • We'll provide breakfast options every morning (yogurt, cereal, toast, buns, eggs, fruit, cheeses, jam, butter, coffee, juice, etc.) at the villa, along with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the week.

    Your first evening includes our welcome pizza + wine, and we'll finish FIELD TRIP with a dinner and farewell party on Monday night.

    Lunches and the remaining dinners aren't included. This gives you some freedom to explore Prague, eat with other participants or make your own plans rather than having every meal organised for you.

    We'll collect dietary requirements before the trip and do our best to accommodate them.

  • Yes. Book with a friend by November 15 and you'll each save €100.

    You'll both need to register and name each other when booking so we know you're coming together. You don't have to share a room or spend the entire week attached at the hip.

    The discount applies to both Villa Stay and Stay Elsewhere bookings.

  • We know that things happen, especially when you're booking something this far in advance.

    You can cancel your FIELD TRIP booking, but cancellation fees apply depending on how close to the retreat you cancel. You can also transfer your place to another photographer if you're no longer able to attend, although you'll be responsible for finding the person who takes your place.

    Full details, including the cancellation schedule and transfer conditions, are included in our Booking Terms + Conditions, which you'll be asked to read and agree to before making your first payment.

    We strongly recommend purchasing travel cancellation insurance when you book.

  • FIELD TRIP requires a minimum of 8 participants to go ahead.

    If we don't reach the minimum number and need to cancel, we'll let you know at least 30 days before FIELD TRIP begins and refund all payments you've made to DFP in full.

    We aren't responsible for independently booked flights, trains or other travel costs, so we strongly recommend booking flexible travel where possible and taking out appropriate travel insurance.

  • We strongly recommend it.

    Your policy should ideally cover cancellation, medical expenses, travel disruption and your photography equipment. You'll be responsible for arranging your own insurance and checking that the cover is appropriate for your circumstances.

  • EU/EEA and US, UK, and Canadian citizens do not need a short-stay visa for tourism or visits under 90 days.

    • Note that visa-exempt travelers will soon need to register via ETIAS for a small fee of €20.
      Visa-exempt non-EU travellers may need an ETIAS travel authorisation for travel in April 2027. Requirements are changing, so we'll provide updated information in your FIELD TRIP travel guide. You are responsible for checking the entry requirements that apply to your nationality before travelling.

  • Always use an incognito browser when searching up flights!!

    We recommend starting with Google Flights or Skyscanner to compare routes and prices from your home airport.

    A few things worth trying before you book:

    • Search Prague (PRG) and use flexible dates if you can. Flying a day earlier or leaving a day later can sometimes make a significant difference to the price.

    • Check nearby departure airports if you have more than one within reasonable travelling distance.

    • Compare direct flights with one-stop routes, but remember that the cheapest option isn't always worth losing half a day of your life in an airport.

    • Once you've found the flight you want, we generally recommend booking directly with the airline rather than through an unknown third-party booking site. It tends to make things much easier if your flight changes or is cancelled.

    • Check baggage allowances before comparing prices, particularly with low-cost airlines. That €89 flight can look rather different once you've added a cabin bag, checked luggage and approximately twelve cameras.

    • If you're not ready to book yet, set up a price alert so you'll be notified if the fare changes.

    You don't need to arrive in Prague at the same time as everyone else. We'll create a group chat before FIELD TRIP so you can compare arrival times and, where possible, coordinate with other participants to travel to the villa together.

  • We'll ask about dietary, accessibility and other practical requirements in your pre-FIELD TRIP questionnaire.
