documentary family photography education and resources workshops

The DFP Community

DFP is a community for documentary photographers
who want to make stronger photographs, deepen the way they see, and stay connected to their creative practice.

A place to remember who the f*ck you are as a photographer, through conversation, provocation, and creative proximity.

Community, critique, education, connection, accountability and creative projects for
documentary photographers who want to stay connected to photography in a way that feels alive

Low pressure. High curiosity. Occasional F-bombs.

WHAT IS THE DFP COMMUNITY?

Photographic & creative companionship

DFP is an international community of documentary (family) photographers who want connection, thoughtful conversation, honest feedback and reasons to keep creating. We offer guidance in a collaborative space where every voice counts, knowledge is exchanged freely, and photography is approached with intention and openness.

It’s low-pressure, but it isn’t passive. DFP is a place to share, ask questions, develop ideas, get feedback, explore new directions and stay engaged with your photography in ways that feel meaningful. There’s accountability when you want it, without making you feel like you’ve failed when life gets crazy and you disappear for a while.

We believe a creative practice needs room for curiosity, experimentation, conversation, boredom, obsession, failure, play and the occasional what the fuck am I even doing?

  • you deserve

FRIENDS WHO WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR ART & CRAFT

A PLACE WHERE CREATIVITY FINDS ITS WITNESS

A COMMUNITY WHERE WE LEAN IN TOGETHER & WHERE WE THRIVE THROUGH CONNECTION & EXPANDING OUR CREATIVE BOUNDARIES

what happens when you stay?

This isn’t about what you consume, instead it’s about what happens when you stay.

DFP has a simple rhythm designed to give you enough structure to stay engaged without turning community into another full-time job.

We meet regularly for critique, conversation, creative projects, education, co-working and sharing, with enough space in between to actually live your life and make the photographs.

The aim is to give you something worth returning to, without becoming another platform you feel guilty for not keeping up with.

Here’s what that can start to look like over time:

after 30 days

You’ve met people and you’ve had an actual conversation about photography rather than watching another reel about it. You shared some, found something in the Education Vault and maybe you’ve joined a critique or followed a prompt somewhere unexpected. You’ve asked questions, answered questions, and are thinking “this is a nice place to land. I want to do this again.”

After 6 months

You’ve found uncommon ways to engage with your photography and you’ve explored your way back to yourself while finding new parts of yourself in the process. People know your work and you know theirs. You’ve had feedback, tried things you might not have tried alone and have people excited to see what you make next.

You’re getting more comfortable saying:

I like this.
I don’t like that.
I don’t know what this is yet.
I want to keep going.

After a year

You’ve made things, developed ideas, followed some creative rabbit holes, finished things, abandoned things, changed your mind and become more connected to your own way of seeing.

And along the way, you’ve started trusting yourself and creating has become a ritual that feels really fucking good.

Photography has a place in your life that you intentionally make space for and you have a supportive community of peers and mentors who are rooting you on.

You’ve built a creative practice that can survive more than one mood, season or algorithm and you’re actually making things that connect and sustain you.

What Happens inside the dfp community?

INCLUDED IN CLUBHOUSE

A dedicated Community space

Join a purpose-built community away from the distractions and noise of social media! We’ve built an online community platform & app to connect documentary photographers from all over the world at every stage, whether you photograph for yourself or for clients.

The community platform is a space made for actual conversation, sharing photographs, asking questions, requesting critique, talking about business, finding collaborators and growing your skills.

weekly Co-Working Hours + accountability

Weekly online co-working sessions for editing, writing, marketing, project work, admin or whatever needs doing, even if not photography related.

Come work alongside us or use the group for accountability, project deadlines, body doubling and a little extra momentum when you need it.

Our virtual co-working sessions combine focused, quiet work time with opportunities for asking questions, problem-solving and discussion.

Monthly community sessions

Our monthly Community Sessions range from informal discussion and open Q&A to focused critique, sequencing, project reviews, business education, and deeper conversations about what makes photographs work.

The aim is not just to share photographs, but to strengthen how you see, think and make. Over time, these sessions are designed to help you make photographs that are more intentional, sophisticated, compelling and distinctly your own.

Sessions are recorded, so even if you cannot attend, you can still gain insights from the replays.

quarterly creative projects

An invitation to make something new.

Every quarter we introduce a creative prompt designed to interrupt your usual ways of thinking, noticing and making.

It doesn’t have to become a documentary photograph. You can create something conceptual, write, collage, paint, cook, wander, make music or follow the idea wherever it takes you. There are no rules.

We meet once to dissect the prompt and exchange ideas, then again at the end of the quarter to share what happened, finished or not.

By stretching your creativity beyond your usual medium, you strengthen the way you see, think, communicate and make photographs with greater intention.

Education vault

Courses, tutorials, critiques, interviews, essays, talks and resources.

A growing library of DFP education and resources you can dip into whenever you want to learn something, solve something or send your brain down a useful rabbit hole.

We keep adding to it with new education, conversations and resources that reflect what photographers are actually working through, questioning and exploring.

No pressure to “complete” the library, just take what you need. Leave the rest.

also included

  • Free photography + business resources and templates

  • Live education and member skill shares

  • Media Club (like a book club but a discussion for various forms of media including books, podcasts, movies, etc.)

  • Invitation to our annual in-person European meet-up

  • Opportunities to be featured by DFP and interviewed for the DFP podcast

  • Opportunity to take part in our annual member exhibition

  • Member-only opportunities, collaborations and occasional surprises

Serious about photography.

Not interested in pretending to be serious people.

We care enormously about photographs, ideas, visual language, storytelling, process and the strange little decisions that make a body of work become yours.

We also swear, go off on tangents, change our minds, make questionable jokes and generally reject the idea that meaningful conversations about art require everyone to become insufferable.

DFP sits somewhere between creative practice, education, friendship, experimentation and a group of people saying, “Okay, but what if you tried this?”

It’s intentionally a little messy. Or, as people in the arts might say, a messy but intentional community.

You’ll probably like it here if…

  • You care about documentary photography and want to keep getting better at it.

  • You miss talking about photography with people who actually give a shit.

  • You want feedback without ego or competition.

  • You need the occasional deadline, nudge or kick in the ass.

  • You want to make personal photographs, client work, experimental projects or some strange combination of all three.

  • You’re curious and willing to question how you see.

  • You want community without another social-media performance.

A community of independent photographers working in creative proximity

There is no “DFP way” to photograph (we do have some doc ethics we like to follow but that has nothing to do with the way you actually make photos).

We're much more interested in helping you understand your own instincts, interests and voice than teaching you to make images that looks like ours.

Being surrounded by other photographers matters because ideas don't develop in isolation. Someone else's question can unlock something in your work, a critique can send you down an entirely different path and seeing another person take a risk can make you take one too.

That exchange is a huge part of why we're here.

Come make things with us.
